As a homeowner in the state of Florida, you understand that your property could be subjected to heavy storms every now and again.
While there is nothing you can do to stop the bad weather from coming, there are steps you can take to protect your home. For example, you can use storm shutters to keep your windows out of harm’s way.
But what about your roof? Unfortunately, there is nothing you can do to protect your roof from inclement weather. Instead, when the wind picks up and the rain begins to fall, all you can do is hope for the best.
Here are a few of the more common types of storm damage:
- Hail damage. Large hail can cause damage to more than your car. As it pounds down on your roof, your shingles can receive quite a bit of damage, thus resulting in future trouble, such as water making its way into your home. Signs of hail damage include: dented shingles, roof leaks, and cracked slate or tile shingles.
- Wind damage. Depending on the strength of the wind, it’s not out of the question that some or all of your roof will tear away from your home. Also, “uplift” could happen. This is when your roof pulls away from your house, and then sets back down.
- Water damage. If your roof suffers damage during a storm and the rain continues to fall, don’t be surprised if moisture makes its way into your house. At that point, you have two problems on your hand: the roof itself and the damage to the interior of your property, such as the wood and drywall.
Homeowners never want to learn that a big storm is moving into their area, as they know it can cause damage to their property. However, if you live in Florida, this is a way of life.
In the event of any property damage, contact your insurance company right away. Also, take photos of the damage, as this can work in your favor in the future.
Remember this: Your insurance company is not on your side, so you need to fight for your rights every step of the way.
